Knowing the Kind of Baby Mattress that Fits your Baby’s Needs

Sleeping helps your baby grow. Your baby get to spend most of his time sleeping and even playing inside the crib once he reaches his toddler years. These are the reasons why you should ensure he gets the most comfortable sleep ever. Of course your baby deserves the best, but choosing the kind of baby mattress is simple, as long as you know what to look for.

There are different types of baby mattresses that can suit your baby’s body type and health conditions. The only key in giving your baby a wonderful and safe sleeping experience is by knowing which type of baby mattress best fits him. With the many kinds available in stores and online, which is which? To help you get familiar with baby mattress, here’s a brief feature of their four types:

  • Foam MattressThe foam mattress is the most common type of baby mattress you can find. It is made up of polyester or polyether—both are synthetic fibers. These materials make the foam mattress lightweight and easy-to-carry. Changing the sheets will also be a cinch with these materials. The covering layer is usually made of polyvinyl chloride or PVC plastic which resists both fire and water. That means that you don’t have to worry about the mattress being a fire hazard. Its water resistant quality also means that spills are easier to clean and will not thoroughly soak the mattress. A foam mattress also has ventilation holes around the edges or at the sides for better air circulation. The foam mattress is the cheapest type of baby mattress.

  • Innerspring MattressThis type of baby mattress is made up of coiled springs, wrapped with layers of foam. The firmness of the mattress is dependent on the coil springs assembled underneath. Experts say that a durable innerspring baby mattress should contain a minimum of 150 coil springs. The cushioning layers make the mattress soft and comfortable for babies. Like the foam mattress, an innerspring mattress has a plastic covering so all you need to do is give it a quick wipe and voila! It’s clean! Another good feature of this mattress is the insulator pad which prevents the coil springs underneath from appearing over time. The innerspring mattress is more expensive than the foam mattress.

  • Organic MattressOrganic cotton mattresses are made up of 100% organic cotton fiber. They are free from toxic chemicals and other harmful substances possibly acquired during the manufacturing process. A baby’s immune system is still not that strong, so any harmful substance inhaled may cause them to get sick. Organic mattresses must pass the organic certification standards to make sure they are made up of genuine natural cotton fabric. Organic mattresses are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and certainly safe for your baby. This is more expensive that the foam and innerspring mattress.

  • Hypoallergenic MattressThis is the most expensive type of baby mattress in the market. Essentially, a hypoallergenic mattress is designed to help prevent allergies in babies. Cotton, linen, and flax are used as covering of the hypoallergenic mattress. These fibers resist dust mites and other tiny organisms from breaking into and staying in the mattress. Most hypoallergenic mattresses use natural materials that alleviate allergic reactions. With the hypoallergenic mattress, you are sure that your baby is safe and on his way to a good and comfortable sleep.
