Want to spend time with the baby at Grandma’s house? Clueless where to lay him after the long ride? If you plan on travelling with your baby to see his grandparents and other relatives on the other side of the state, consider the gear you need to prepare before the trip. One basic necessity would be the sleeping crib mattress of your newborn. A portable crib mattress would make sense to you and your little one!

The Portable Crib Purchasing Guide

Here are some guidelines to help you choose your portable crib mattress:

  • Portability. Obviously, you don’t want to carry a heavy, hard-to-fix mattress. Look for one that can easily be stored during travel. What you need is a portable and compact crib mattress that not only fits your car but also matches the size of the portable crib. More often than not, portable crib mattresses are smaller in size and weighs less compared to the standard crib mattress you have at home. To give you an idea, the dimensions of an average portable crib will be 24 x 38 inches—like the ones available in the market today. Then again, check the measurements of your crib before buying one. More so, take note of the actual sizes so you won’t waste time and money.
  • Safety. Safety comes first! Your baby needs a durable and firm mattress to sleep on especially when you are always on the go. A firm and durable mattress would surely put your baby into a cozy sleep. This is very essential because babies spend most of their time sleeping or lying down. You must make sure that the mattress is not too soft to avoid suffocation. To check the firmness of the mattress, press the center and edges of the foam using your hands. If the foam is firm, it will quickly return to its original form. If it’s too soft, it will not bounce back as quickly. Your baby might have a hard time lifting his head up. Go for the sturdy one.
  • Easy to use and clean. You also want a crib mattress that is easy to clean, right? Some portable crib mattresses are antimicrobial. This simply means it discourages the rapid growth of bacteria and mold in your baby’s pad. But you can’t really be sure of this. While on the road, expect spills and water drops to happen. A fine portable crib mattress should be easy to clean.  One feature you might want to look at is its resistance to wet substances. A waterproof portable crib mattress is always a good choice. One wipe and you’re good to go!
  • Availability of vents. Look for a portable crib mattress that has eyelet vents around. The mattress’ freshness relies on its vents. The more vents it has, the less possibility of bad odors being trapped inside. Remember that your baby ought to have a clean, safe, breathing and sleeping environment.

You and your baby are sure to have a good travel with an excellent portable crib mattress. After all, your baby deserves a good sleep even when away from the comfort of your own home. Have a safe trip!
