Standard Crib Mattress Size

Standard Crib Mattress Size

Yes, crib mattress size is important. There is a standard size of crib mattress and not all mattresses are as per this specification. If you invest in a good baby mattress, then you need to make sure that it the right one and it is easy to assume that size is not something to think about. It is always better to take all measurements and double-check that everything fits.

An important reason why you should look at this seriously is that a misfit between the mattress and the crib is a big potential safety hazard. Why would you want to risk the safety of your baby over something like this?

So let’s move to the dimensions:

  • length 51 5/8 inches
  • width 27/4 inches
  • depth 4-6 inches for foam and 5-6 inches for coil mattresses, but should never exceed 6 inches

A basic check is to make sure the mattress fits the crib well, meaning there is no space between the mattress and the crib, where your baby might crawl beneath. If the measurements are slightly different, a good way to check if everything is still ok is to use the so called “finger test”.

Use “Finger Test” To Check Crib Mattress Fit

This might sound like a fancy test, but it’s really, really easy. All you need to do is try to fit two fingers (kept side by side) between the mattress and the sides of the crib. If you manage, it means the mattress is too small, as you should be able to fit only one finger.

A good tip is to think not only about the mattress size, but about crib size as well. It might happen that you own a non-standard size crib. Then of course you need to choose the mattress accordingly. Just make sure you check this before the purchase. To be honest, I believe the safest way is to just measure everything yourself and in this way you will be sure you avoid problems.

Good luck!
